Healthy Habits Guest Star: Papa Didos!

On Wednesday, January 25, Dennis Yang, founder of Papa Didos Foundation, exercised and read with 3^rd and 4^th graders during Healthy Habits. Yang, who has run across the country and written 100 children books, spoke to members about the importance of education and health. Members had a great time running relay races and playing games before reading one of Papa Dido’s newest books, “The Tenth Floor.” READ MORE

The Club recently had their Annual Fine Arts Exhibit and Family Fun Night. The Exhibit is up through the end of January and showcases over 600 pieces of artwork from 200 talented club members. Young Ladies Learn Old Manners

Last Wednesday, thirteen young ladies from TLC’s Smart Girls & Torch Club programs went to the Heritage Museum in Santa Ana to participate in a “Mind Your Manners” etiquette class. The ladies learned all about the proper table manners that have spanned the past century during a tea party, complete with lemonade and cookies. The trip included an educational tour of the historic Kellogg house and the girls even had an opportunity to dress up in Victorian-era clothing! READ MORE

TLC’s X-treme Adventure Club Take Laguna Hike

Friday, Nov. 18th-TLC’s X-treme Adventure Club went on a rock-climbing scouting trip up Laguna Canyon. Their mission: To find a rock rock face large enough to learn how to rock climb. Although the “team” did not find the exact location for their future excursion, they all had a great time exploring the wilds. They even managed to play a little Army along the way. Club Zoom at Main Branch

Club Zoom is an experience unlike any other. This science club opens up new opportunities and ideas to the members and allows them to do hands-on activities while exploring the world they live in. We have been experiencing the amazing and fun things that dry ice can do when used properly. The children have learned that dry ice is made up of frozen carbon dioxide which means it doesn’t melt like regular ice. When handling the ice, the members used winter gloves to make sure they didn’t burn their hands. During the experiments we dropped dry ice into warm water the smoke we saw was a combination of carbon dioxide and water vapor. The gas we saw was actually a cloud of tiny water droplets. READ MORE

TLC Brings Awareness with Reverse Trick or Treating

For Halloween this year, members of TLC’s Torch Club decided they would create awareness about the chocolate industry by selling fair trade chocolates. Led by a group of 4^th grade girls, the Torch Club
partnered with the human rights organization Global Exchange to sell fair trade chocolates and use the proceeds to help children trapped in slave labor. Through chocolate sales and handouts, Torch Club engaged and educated parents and fellow peers about child labor in developing countries, specifically how our Halloween traditions of distributing candy supports child labor. The Torch Clubbers were dedicated to their cause and raised over $90 – which will go towards helping a child trapped in slavery have freedom. Way to go Torch Club! READ MORE

ImageMakers Prep for Photo Exhibit

With TLC’s upcoming Open House & Photo Exhibit on the horizon, ImageMakers Photo Club members have been hard at work taking amazing pictures for display. Besides our very popular “free photography” days down at Bluebird Park, members have practiced landscape, portrait, and black and white photography. Recently, our ImageMakers took a trip to Heisler Park to practice taking photos of moving objects – especially waves – and to capture an amazing Laguna Beach sunset. READ MORE

A Spooktacular Halloween

Halloween at the Club began with ghosts made out of sheets and giant trash bag spiders, suspended above members heads as they entered the building. Festivities included the annual limbo parade followed by a costume contest with great prizes. A group even went on a “Zombie Walk” to some local businesses to received healthy treats. Back at the club members made skeletons out of q-tips and painted pumpkins into masterpieces to make this Halloween a special and memorable day at the Boys & Girls Club! READ MORE
